Werewolf Killed in Selarum

A large wolf was killed by guards within the city proper of Selarum, and was later determined to be a lycanthrope.

"This is a serious issue," said Jaren, one of the guardsmen involved in the slaying. He seemed shaken when he discussed it. "The rumours are out that they're coming up from Saravai."

These rumors have long been afloat -- second-generation lycanthropes often are not afflicted with the madness which overtakes those infected with the disease, and the fear is that the lycanthropes of Saravai, many of whom have lived with the disease all their lives, are organizing and preparing to move off the isle.

"If this happens, it's our own fault," said Jaren. "By exiling them there, we created a place where they could breed and become more rational. We've created monsters."

He could be right about our province's past decisions, but even if he is, we will be the ones stuck with the results. In the past, numerous attempts have been made to 'clean' the island -- including burning. But the lycanthropes have defended their homeland, and no one knows how many now live on the isle. It's quite possible they're overpopulating the island, and need new homes.

"All the provinces are in danger," said Jaren. "Especially the Old World and Gwynned. We have to act now."

Most, however, are content to leave things as they are. There have been numerous instances of lycanthropes appearing in the Old World, and it's not necessarily due to people from Saravai. This is a natural phenomenon, and there are surely wild lycanthropes throughout the lands.

As of now, no official action is being taken, but guards have been asked to be on the lookout for lycanthropes.

Magic Banned in Casara

It has long been the law in Casara that magic is to be practiced only by court-sanctioned magicians. Similar laws exist in Masalla and Faol, but the restrictions are seldom enforced. Casara enforces these laws selectively at best, and it’s long been known that magicians can practice in the province, so long as they don’t draw attention to themselves.

At the same time, Casara is home to Maejen Lor, one of the world’s most famous centers of magical learning, and the Tanjaat District, where illegal magics are freely practiced.

In response to threats from within the Tanjaat District, Casaran authorities have proclaimed that they will enforce the ban on magical practice, with a punishment of death.

"We’ve had too many incidents," said Lord Katarren, a dignitary visiting Aranor. "They can keep their magic in Tanjaat, or they’ll face the consequences."

The Tanjaat District is oft considered a miniature province within Casara, where many of the magicians fled after the fall of Antara. And most of them that made the district their residence were of the type who have dispensed with law.

The exact nature of the ‘incidents’ has not been disclosed, but it’s clear that tension is rising.

Autumn Colours Dazzle

It has been called ‘one of the brightest years in the Old World’s history’, and everyone is taking note – the fall colours are simply vibrant this year.

Favorite lookouts, like the Far Tower and Tynan’s Temple, are gathering great crowds, and the guards have had to kick people off the city walls numerous times.

"The colours are best up there," said one man who was found along the top. He didn’t disclose how he got up to the walkway, but he says the view was worth it. "The guard should open the walls to sightseers," he said.

Ship owners are also taking advantage of the colours, offering rides along the coast. At least three ships are making regular trips, and the cost is under ten silver for a two-hour ride.

No one knows why leaves change colour in the autumn, but the effects are certainly appreciated by all.
