Second Passage of the Dark Moon

Woman Dominates Arena

For the first time since the opening of Aranor’s Arena, a woman is dominating the warrior games. Kalista is Shavay, and attributes her success to her worship of the goddess Sorcha.

Kalista does not speak Caradorian – her real name is difficult to pronounce – and she tells us, through translators, that she escaped a brutal, male-dominated society in central Shavay, and made her way through various adventures to the shores of the Old World. She does not have any special training, but says that she learned to fight by battling ‘tigers and leopards’. Her sleek Shavay skin is unscarred, and she moves with an uncanny agility and grace. She says that other people ‘move very slow’ in the Arena.

She has won two championships in the last two passages, both in the ‘Free Combat’ games, where live weapons are used and healers stand on the ready.

Ice Floes Depart

Trade has been re-established past Teran’s Point, though the ships and goods lost in the strange events will cause the prices of many goods to rise – some dramatically. The new trade openings have many people scrambling to purchase spaces in ships’ cargo holds – a relatively new practice which allows the average person to invest in overseas trade.

Ships report that the ice is no longer present in the waters, firming speculation that the former Emperor of Jedda was using magicians to create the ice, thus offering ships little choice but to utilize his port.

Numerous ships and people are still missing. New counts indicate that the Emperor, along with fifty of his entourage, are unaccounted for, as well as eighty sailors. The Emperor’s entourage included magicians, Shai-kan warriors, courtesans, noble families, and entertainers.

Though explorers have attempted to penetrate the rocky areas around the old fae keep, no sign of the missing people or ships has yet been found.

Princess Jewel Stolen

A huge citrine gemstone, claimed to be the world’s largest flawless gem of that type, was stolen from a home in Aranor. The gemstone was being displayed during a ball at the household of Lord Karelle, a noble well-known for his lavish parties. The gem was displayed in a glass case and a servant was sitting beside it as guard, but it was not magically protected.

The stone, known as ‘Princess Jewel’, can be returned to Lord Karelle for a reward of ten thousand silver – with no questions asked. One sage estimates, however, that the jewel could fetch ten times that if sold to the right collector.

The city guard is investigating the case, and feels that the stone was magically conjured out of its case. They report that they have no other clues, and have little hope of finding the gemstone unless it appears during the thief’s attempt to sell it.
