Third Passage of the Plowing Moon

‘Century Chest’ Found in Selarum

Most people know of the tradition of the Century Chest. A chest is buried with artifacts of the times, in the hopes that it will be re-discovered in the future and opened to reveal its secrets.

When Emily Masten discovered a journal in the Selarum library that made reference to an official Century Chest burial ten years after the founding of Selarum, she began putting together the pieces of a grand puzzle – a puzzle that led to her requesting permission from Queen Ennea to dig a hole in Greenrill Park. And at the bottom of the hole?

Emily, along with city officials, unearthed a chest which has been dated as almost four hundred years old. Emily happily donated the contents to the Museum of Selarum, and in the new display citizens can witness the works of prior ages.

"We found coins from all the Known Lands of the times," Emily said, "as well as clothing, a remarkable carved comb, some rings that display examples of metalwork, children's toys and examples of eating ware, scissors, and other day-to-day artifacts -- everything was in a nearly pristine state of preservation."

She went on to explain that the most valuable find was a scroll containing eight sheets written by one ‘Lord Cavus’, describing the political and emotional turmoil of establishing a new settlement and getting it recognized by the world. The parchment is being displayed with the other artifacts, and is creating much excitement among historians, who are gaining a much clearer understanding of life during the beginning of the ‘Goddard Times’.

Emily Masten, who has asked that the details of her life remain anonymous, has accepted a small reward from the city of Selarum for her efforts in finding the treasure.

Emperor Making Bounds

The Emperor of Jedda Felsuin continues to make amends for the former Emperor’s actions. His relationship with the Empress is reportedly ‘quite good’, and he is helping to rebuild Mymé.

"He is a man of great charisma, and can rally the people unlike any leader before him," said Saien, a Jeddan trader who was among those interviewed for this story. "The people of Irutoka are behind him, even though his ideas are contrary to many of the former Emperor’s."

Reports suggest that he has forged a relationship with Queen Lillian, and Queen Lillian has announced that trade sanctions against Irutoka will be dropped beginning at the start of the Cricket Moon.

Although rumours still persist that some attempt will be made on the Emperor’s life, possibly by agents of the former Emperor who remains uncaptured, most agree that a new age of prosperity is being forged for both the isles of Jedda. Indeed, the largest concern is that the current Emperor, who is standing in until the ‘real’ Emperor can be found via Jeddan tradition, will be replaced with someone who will undo the good he has done. Unless there is a powerful breach of Jeddan tradition, the ‘real’ Emperor will be instated as soon as he is found. The tradition, in short, searches for the Emperor among members of the populace, applying certain tests and qualifications in the search. When found, the Emperor will be paraded throughout Irutoka and then spend a year learning the requirements of office – in tradition-talk, this means that he will be ‘purified’ and ‘deified’.

Until then, things are looking quite well for Jedda Felsuin.

Spring Fashions Emerge

Spring is finally strongly upon us, and Moraithian fashions are back in style. Most are blaming it on the recent surge of Moraithian imports, a result of record-breaking harvests of tropical fruits. Prices of oranges, merras, and mangoes have been low on the streets of Aranor, giving birth to dreams of living in a tropical paradise.

The fashions are quite traditional, with silken saris, shorts, and bra-tops being the most common of sights. Bright, playful cosmetics complete the ensemble. Some nobles, of course, are complaining at the abundance of flesh on display, but the fashion’s defenders contend that we must allow for ‘cultural differences’.

This is one fashion that is fun, in-style, and affordable for all.
