Animals

Many animals roam the lands of Carador, and most are familiar. Because the list is so large, the ST will have to decide the statistics for individual animals, but a good list of examples will be provided here. Some are predators, while others are prey animals (their statistics are given so that they may be hunted). See Fighting Animals under Combat in the Storytelling section if combat is to be engaged in.

Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             60     -2            -             -
Armor Rating P- S- C- none
Number of Attacks- 1
Speed Rating - 19
Appearance and Description - Quick and alert, rabbit makes for good stew, but is hard to catch without setting snares. Still, a good archer can take one. If picked up alive, rabbits will attempt to bite. *

Wolf

Damage Points- 40
Defense - 30%
Reaction - 10
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             70        4         P             -
Claw           40        1         -              -
Armor Rating P- 2 S- 3 C- 3
Number of Attacks- 1 (see Fighting Animals)
Speed Rating - 19
Appearance and Description - These large, powerful predators usually travel in packs of 6 to 10 individuals. Wolves are very selective about their prey, and will attempt only to attack if the odds seem very good. They most often take deer, moose, rabbit, and mice, but they will not hesitate to attack a lone human or a small group which does not appear able to defend itself. Wolves, if they do not desire to be seen, seldom are. *

Deer

Damage Points- 30 (50 for stag)
Defense - 50%
Reaction - 10

Antlers (stag)     60         5         P             -
Armor Rating P- 1 S- 2 C- 1
Number of Attacks- 1
Speed Rating - 23
Appearance and Description - Deer are perhaps the favorite prey of most large predators, including humans. Most often they travel in groups, the stag keeping a harem of 2-10 does. They will run at the first sign of danger, but if more than half of his harem seems likely to come to harm, a stag will sometimes turn and charge, attacking the nearest person or horse with its antlers.
*

Moose

Damage Points- 100
Defense - 20%
Reaction - 8
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Rack             65     8         C             -
Trample       60     7         C             -
Armor Rating P- 2 S- 4 C- 3
Number of Attacks- 1
Speed Rating - 17
Appearance and Description - These huge animals account for more hunters' deaths than any other animal. Yes, it's not a glorious way to go.
The moose is a territorial animal, and is as likely to charge intruders as to run away. If a moose can manage to knock a person down (by scoring a grievous injury that results in a Pass action), they will attempt to trample the person. They will do so only once, and then back off to face any other intruders or see if the offending person gets up. *

Coyote

Damage Points- 30
Defense - 40%
Reaction - 10
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             70         2         P             -
Armor Rating P- 2 S-3 C- 2
Number of Attacks- 1
Speed Rating - 24
Appearance and Description - Coyotes will run at the first sign of any disturbance, and will fight only if cornered. *

Raccoon

Damage Points- 15
Defense - 30%
Reaction - 6
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             60         1         -             -
Armor Rating P- 1 S- 2 C- 1
Number of Attacks- 1
Speed Rating - 10
Appearance and Description - A raccoon is vicious if cornered, and will fight valiantly. Most often, however, they flee from danger by climbing trees. Because they are primarily nocturnal, they are seldom seen during the day. *

Bear

Damage Points- 80
Defense - 20%
Reaction - 5
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             50      3          P             -
Claw           65      4          S             -
Armor Rating P- 3 S- 5 C- 4
Number of Attacks- 1 (see Fighting Animals)
Speed Rating - 11
Appearance and Description - These dark-colored bears weigh a little more than a man and are much sought after for meat. They tend to flee danger, but will attack if cornered, if their young are threatened, of if pursuit gains too closely upon them. Many will climb trees if they have time to escape in that manner, and making them easy prey for archers. *

Northern Bear

Damage Points-160
Defense - 20%
Reaction - 5
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             65       6          P             -
Claw           70       8          S             -
Armor Rating P- 3 S- 7 C- 6
Number of Attacks- 1 (see Fighting Animals)
Speed Rating - 13
Appearance and Description - These huge bears come in all varieties of color, from silver to black to shaggy brown. They frequent mountainous regions of the Old World, the New World, and Masalla, and are quite territorial. Thus the general rule is to give them a wide berth, for they will usually make defensive displays, and if such displays are heeded, they will not attack. Otherwise they will rush into even a large group, attacking people or horses, in an attempt to make them flee. *

Great Forest Cat

Damage Points- 200
Defense - 40%
Reaction - 9
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             70       8           P             -
Claw           80     10           S             -
Number of Attacks- 1 (see Fighting Animals)
Speed Rating - 20
Appearance and Description - These are the largest cats of any known province, and they make their home in the deep forests and low mountains of the Old and New Worlds. As large as a pony, they are wide and shaggy, striped or spotted with colors in the browns, tans, and beiges. Great Forest Cats will readily hunt anything their size and smaller, including humans and even horses. They are fond of stalking and pouncing. They will not, however, put up much of a fight for their prey, and if injured significantly they will usually flee. *

Cougar

Damage Points- 60
Defense - 50%
Reaction - 10
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite              70     4            P             -

Armor Rating P- 1 S- 1 C- 1
Number of Attacks- 1 (see Fighting Animals)
Speed Rating - 23
Appearance and Description - These tan to black cats are common in all temperate areas. They are shy and reclusive, but have been known to attack and eat lone and unarmed travelers. *

Tiger

Damage Points- 100
Defense - 50%
Reaction - 10
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite             75        6         P             -
Claw           80        9         S             -
Armor Rating P-2 S- 4 C- 3
Number of Attacks- 1 (see Fighting Animals)
Speed Rating - 20
Appearance and Description - Tigers are found in Moraithe, Jedda, Japura, and Shavay, usually frequenting light jungles. They are potent predators, and will attack lone humans, especially at night. They are also adept swimmers, and have been known to climb up onto native rivercraft and steal people away into the night.
Cloaked in mystery and superstition, tigers come in orange and black, black and white, black and red, and even a pure black variety in Japura. *

Great Eagle

Damage Points- 300
Defense - 20%
Reaction - 6
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Talons         70     18         S             -
Beak             70     9           S             -
Armor Rating P- 9 S- 14 C- 12
Number of Attacks- 2 (see Fighting Animals)
Speed Rating - 45 flying
Appearance and Description - These majestic animals can measure 100' from wingtip to wingtip, with talons as long as a man's forearm. They make their homes in high mountains and seldom enter the lives of humans, though it is not unheard of for one to make a meal of a horse and rider. These creatures are only a danger in open areas, but in such terrain they make truly dangerous adversaries. They are not known as being violent, however, and some even say they possess intelligence similar to our own. *

Shark

Damage Points- 60
Defense - 60%
Reaction - 9
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Bite              60     10         S             -
Armor Rating P-1 S- 1 C- 1
Number of Attacks- 1
Speed Rating - 20 swimming
Appearance and Description - These ferocious ocean predators will often travel in packs of 4 to 8 individuals, searching for prey. The most dangerous varieties exist near southern Moraithe and in the waters below Sehra, but sharks in all the oceans have been known to attack. They come in a wide variety of sizes, so the stats above should be taken in stride. *

Horse

Damage Points- 80
Defense - 20%
Reaction - 9
Weapons     %     DB     Type     Range

Hooves        50       6          C             -
Bite              30       4          C             -
Armor Rating P- 1 S- 1 C- 1
Number of Attacks- 2
Speed Rating - 20
Appearance and Description - There are many breeds of horses, domesticated and wild, of a variety of sizes, speeds, and temperaments. If angered or trained to attack, a horse makes a dangerous opponent, but most horses will only nip and paw. If a horse is made nervous and someone approaches quite closely, it may bite. *
