Basics

It is recommended that the ST encourage the players to read the Tomes, which contain much basic knowledge about the world of Carador.  The Treatises can be treated like a library -- curious or scholarly players might add to their knowledge by researching specific things.

A character is the "role" you, as a player, will go into each time you venture to Carador. You will be creating not only a basic outline of your build, looks, etc., but also a personality, history, and skills.

To begin, simply sit down and think of who you’d like to be.  Most of the information given in the Creating a Character section is based on an Old World perspective, so we recommend starting your character in the Old World, at least for the first time.  Talk to your ST.

Take time to read through this site, or peruse the Skills section. Think of what you’d like to look like – strong and wide or svelte and lithe, beautiful or more average, older or younger.

Consider what skills you might have learned so far in life – do you know magic, or are you good with a blade, or well versed in wood lore?

Then think of your personality. Do you want to be moralistic and thoughtful, or short-tempered, or caring, or brash?

These considerations build the basic foundation around which you will create your character. Take some time to think them over – go for a walk and imagine your new self – think of what you’d like to be like and have as your current goals in life.

Here is a basic outline of the process you’ll follow in creating your character.

First, get a basic idea of your character by checking out Character Themes, determining your Race, and thinking about your Appearance.

Second, determine your age.

Third, roll up your statistics. Look on the Ability Score Bonuses Chart to see what special benefits you’ll gain from any high statistics you might have.

Fourth, roll up your born talents.

Fifth, roll up your gold and experience.

Sixth, spend your experience on any Skills, Special Skills, Magic, or other advancements you want to make (see Spending Experience in Character Growth).

Seventh, purchase any weapons and equipment you might desire.

Eight, flesh out your character in your mind by thinking about your history, your family, and likes or dislikes.

Then you’re ready to play! Your character will grow and develop as you travel through the world.

To begin, go to Character Themes.  From there, you'll follow a simple linear process, moving from one step to the next.  You'll be guided along as you go.  At the bottom of each page will be a link to the next step in the process.

But first, print up a Sample Character Sheet. You can use it to write your information on as you go, or just use it as a reference if you’d like to use a different design.

Ready?  Go to Character Themes.
