Overland Dangers

Dangers at Sea

I'll start this tome off by saying that travel is costly. Not only does it utilize means that get expensive after a while (ships, carriages, horses, shoes . . .), but there's many a danger along the way. So why do we do it?

I'm told there was a time when most people stayed where they were born. And indeed, I've come across old folks in inland villages that have never seen the sea. But travel is necessary for a number of reasons. Not only does it allow trade between provinces, but it allows the opportunity to visit relatives, go on holiday, and experience exotic cultures.

The means of travel are many, from ships to horseback to walking on one's own feet. And many people have made a business of seeing to it that travel is safe. Such businesses need to keep a spotless reputation, and make sure that their clients always reach their destinations alive and sound. So purchasing passage with a reputable company practically guarantees your safe arrival. Still, if you can't afford such services, you're on your own, and it pays to know the use of a sword and to have some travel-smarts.

The most important things to remember are to be aware -- avoid dangers rather than confront them, and if you're travelling overland on any but the most well-used roadways, make sure that you're in an inn by nightfall, or at least that you have a well-guarded camp, because darkness brings all sorts of nasties out to play.
