My name is Melantha, and I have long made study of all manner of creatures which prey upon people. There is little doubt that these creatures evolved along with us, as many possess abilities which seem specifically designed to lure humans.
Why humans? It seems that the answer to this question urges us to look upon ourselves with clear vision. Not only are we relatively defenseless in our natural state, with weakened senses, no natural weapons, and typically, an ego that lures us into dangerous situations, but we possess other attributes of value as well, from our tendency to collect curious objects (which many of these creatures value) to a desire to communicate with or understand that which we do not know.
Many of these creatures, then, have grown into forms which mimic the ideals we find attractive in our own kind, and many possess a desire to communicate back to us, or have abilities which allow them to subtly manipulate our emotions. Thus, while most animals fight for their lives, humans, if properly dealt with, can be encouraged to surrender themselves to a predator, and the predator cuts its own risk of injury or death.
So the darker things of Carador tend toward a beautiful seductiveness, all the better to lure us to our doom or stay our hand when we think ourselves ready to slay some evil beast. This is not to say that some things do not have forms terrible to behold, for some creatures are built not to lure, but only to rend and tear, or to stalk, silent, through the night.
May this be an introduction to what stalks the night.
